Prying Tye from the old ladies was a task that needed an entire club. My brother was also loathe to escape the attention of the women and children, and I let Tye suck it up for a few hours. Under Mum’s watchful eye, I snatched Tye and forced him into the formal drawing room where we’d have privacy. The area was off-limits to anyone under thirteen, so the kids couldn’t bother us.

“What’s up, bro?” Tye asked, relaxing back on a couch.

“Tye, I’ve applied to Hellfire as a candidate,” I announced without preamble. Shock crossed Tye’s face, and he sat forward.

“You did what?”

“You heard me, Tye; I’ve spoken to Dad and explained why.”

“Because being firstborn and the first legacy, they’d smother you,” Tye said astutely.

“Yeah, Chance won’t, and I need freedom. I’m looking for somewhere to live in Spearfish. Mum knows but isn’t too happy about it. And that’s what I want to discuss.”

“About Mum being unhappy?” Tye asked, confused. Oops, I realised I’d jumped the main point.

“No, sorry, this is coming out wrong. When Mum passes, Reading Hall becomes mine, but I’ve ideas on how to use the Hall for everybody’s benefit. It will always remain everyone’s home, but I’d prefer to expand on it just being a home for eighteen rich kids.”

“What’s this got to do with me, Micah? Ain’t that way in the future?”

“Has plenty to do with you, and yeah, we have decades before it becomes an issue. But I don’t want surprises when I implement my plans. Tye, I don’t particularly need Reading Hall as my home. House is too big, and I’m not Mum and having eighteen children!”

“Don’t think Mom knows how she ended up with that many kids herself, bro.” Tye grunted and laughed.

“Nah, she doesn’t. But Reading Hall will come to me. But my future plans can mix with the present day, so listen up, Tye. I want to keep the ice rink and ballpark up to standard. Aaron’s becoming a fast little fucker. Mum thinks he’s into American football, and Jared is into kickboxing. Jared’s working out with Aunt Artemis a lot. This means Mother will build Aaron a field and Jared a dojo. Lord knows what the younger kids will do. When you retire, I was hoping you could run a hockey club for kids. We’ll fund several teams through our inheritance or earnings.”

Tye leant forward and considered my words.

“Mom and Dad will still be alive when I quit.”

“Fucking hope so, brother. But even with all the grandchildren Mum’s planning, it won’t fill the Hall. The plan is to ask Mum and Dad if we can use the facilities to run projects while they’re alive and when it’s time, it will become my decision. I will sponsor scholarships for underprivileged children who have car design and paintwork talent. I’ll be sending them to the schools Mum owns. They’ll get a free ride there and stay in the dorms, which I’ll cover in the scholarship. But a fair part of their learning will concern cars.
